Consultations and follow-ups are free
This guide is written by the team that runs EMsculpt NEO at our clinic on Clanwilliam Square and reviewed by our clinician, Dr Marie Duggan. It explains what EMsculpt NEO does, what the trials measured, what a course involves, how we price it in euro and who it suits best, so you arrive at your free consultation knowing what to ask.
What EMsculpt NEO is
EMsculpt NEO is a body treatment made by BTL Industries. A flat applicator is strapped over a muscle group and does two things at once. An electromagnetic field, which BTL calls HIFEM, drives the nerves of the muscle at a rate that a 2019 paper on the original device describes as "almost 20 thousand pulses" in a 30-minute session. The authors say the resulting contractions cannot be reached voluntarily. At the same time radiofrequency warms the fat layer over the muscle to 42 to 45 degrees in manufacturer-linked human studies, the range at which fat cells are reported to begin programmed cell death (apoptosis); on the manufacturer's account the body then clears them over the following weeks. The original EMsculpt, which some clinics still run, has the electromagnetic part only and carries no fat-reduction clearance.
Nothing is cut or injected, and you lie down for the session. Two applicators can run at the same time, so two areas, such as both flanks, can be treated in the same 30 minutes.
You may have seen a session described as "20,000 crunches". The 20,000 is a count of pulses from the applicator in 30 minutes, not of crunches; what the pulses produce is strong, involuntary contractions of the muscle, and in the trials the muscle measured thicker at three months.
Does EMsculpt NEO actually work?
Yes, on the measures the trials used: the treated area had a thinner fat layer and a thicker muscle at three months, and on the abdomen the waist measured smaller. Here is what was measured, area by area; the consultation tells you what it means for your own body.
- In a sham-controlled imaging trial (Samuels, 2022; the three authors advise the manufacturer), 72 people had three weekly sessions or a sham. Three months later the treated group's abdominal fat layer was 28.3% thinner on ultrasound (about 7.6 mm) and the rectus muscle 24.2% thicker (about 2.3 mm), and the change held at six months.
- In the single-arm study submitted to the US regulator for the fat clearance, 44 people were enrolled and 42 completed three sessions: abdominal fat down 29.8% on ultrasound at three months and abdominal circumference down 3.2 cm on average, with 88% losing at least 1.5 cm.
- For the flanks, an MRI study (Cohen, 2024) found fat 28.8% thinner and the oblique muscles 27.2% thicker after four weekly sessions; the manufacturer's single-arm flank study submitted to the US regulator measured a 5 mm average reduction by ultrasound.
- For the upper arms, fat was 25.5% thinner and the triceps 23.9% thicker in the 25 people scanned at three months (Jacob and Weiss, 2023). For the buttocks, the gluteal muscle thickened by about 25% at three months in an MRI study that recruited 67 people (54 analysed).
- Independent reviews that pooled the published studies (Swanson 2023, Kohan 2024, Swanson 2025) put the average change at about 5.5 to 8 mm less fat and 2 to 5.5 mm more muscle, depending on the area and the device generation. That is millimetres and centimetres: in the manufacturer's abdomen study the waist measured 3.2 cm smaller on average and 88% lost at least 1.5 cm; your own dated photographs at three months are the measure that matters.
So the change to look for is a firmer treated area and a thinner fat layer, visible at around three months; in our experience it shows best in people who are already close to their target weight, and the pinch test at your free consultation tells you whether that is you. It changes shape, not weight: body weight did not change in the trials, and results vary from person to person.
What EMsculpt NEO does well:
- Firming the abdomen and the waist line in someone who exercises and has a soft layer left.
- Strengthening the abdominal wall after pregnancy: in two small uncontrolled studies of the original EMsculpt the gap between the abdominal muscles narrowed by about 10% to 23%, and at your consultation the clinician checks the gap and looks for a hernia before we treat.
- Toning the buttocks, thighs and arms, and reducing the fat on the flanks, thighs and upper arms.
What EMsculpt NEO does not do:
- It does not make you lose weight, and it does not replace exercise or diet.
- It does not reduce fat on the buttocks or calves: those are muscle-toning indications only.
- It is not the treatment for loose skin, cellulite or a large, pinchable bulge; a bulge you can pinch is a fat-freezing question, we provide CoolSculpting at the same clinic, and the consultation tells you which fits.
Who EMsculpt NEO suits, and who it does not
In our experience the best candidates are people with a body mass index under about 30, who train or want to, with a soft layer over a muscle they want firmer: the abdomen after children, the flanks, the upper arms, the buttocks. One study of the original EMsculpt found larger changes at a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9; the NEO sham-controlled trial found no link between BMI and result. The manufacturer says the treatment suits people up to a BMI of 35, which was the entry limit of its trial; the US label itself sets a BMI limit of 30 only for the upper arms. The fat clearance covered skin types I to III first and all skin types from 2021 for the abdomen and thighs, with the flanks cleared for types I to IV and the arms for II and III.
The list below is the manufacturer's guidance as clinics relay it, and the clinician checks your history against the manufacturer's full list at your consultation:
- A pacemaker, a defibrillator, a neurostimulator, a drug pump or any implanted electronic device.
- Metal in or near the treated area, including a copper coil, plates, screws or a joint replacement.
- Pregnancy, and breastfeeding on some clinic sheets. We also wait until you have recovered from the birth.
- A hernia in the treated area.
- Cancer or a malignancy in the area, a fever, epilepsy, a heart condition, a bleeding disorder or blood thinners.
- Recent surgery, an open wound or an infection in the area. The manufacturer's FDA filing also lists use on injured or otherwise impaired muscles as contraindicated.
Tell us about any of these at the consultation, and about any recent abdominal surgery, a caesarean or a diastasis, which we assess before we treat.
EMsculpt NEO works with what your body does for itself: your own muscle grows and, on the manufacturer's account, your own body clears the fat. If you want injectable treatments as well, our doctor can provide them; we time them around your course. After an injectable treatment in the area we wait two weeks before treating it, and four weeks after dermal filler.

What a session is like, step by step
- Consultation. The clinician looks at the area, pinches the fat layer, asks about your training and your history, and agrees the areas and the number of sessions. You get the plan and the price in writing, in euro. Consultations and follow-up reviews are free.
- Preparation. In our practice there is no numbing and no gel. The applicator is strapped over the muscle with a belt. Jewellery and anything metal come off. We ask you to come without fake tan.
- The 30 minutes. The intensity goes up in steps to the level you can hold. You feel the muscle contract in waves, like a very hard workout you are not doing, with warmth from the radiofrequency. In our experience most people find it intense rather than painful, and 93% of the people in the manufacturer's FDA study reported none to minimal discomfort.
- After. The applicator comes off, the skin is pink and warm for an hour or so, and you go back to your day. Expect the muscle to feel as it does after heavy exercise for a day or two.
How many sessions, when you see the result, how long it lasts
| Feature | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Sessions in a course | 4, about a week apart, which is our protocol (the sham-controlled trial and the manufacturer's FDA abdomen study used three weekly sessions; the flank, arm and buttock studies used four) |
| First change | Many people feel the muscle working from the first session; in our experience the area starts to look firmer two to four weeks after the last one |
| Main result | Measured at three months in most of the NEO studies |
| How long it lasts | Held at six months in the sham-controlled trial. For the muscle-only version, a 21-patient uncontrolled study measured the changes about a year later: fat about 15% thinner and muscle about 19% thicker than at baseline. In our experience the muscle fades like any training if you stop using it, and the fat holds while your weight holds |
| Maintenance | In our experience a single session every three to six months keeps the tone; we review you at three months and decide together |
Is four sessions enough? Four is the course in the flank, arm and buttock studies and it is ours; in our experience the fourth is where the firmness becomes visible rather than felt. The sham-controlled trial and the manufacturer's FDA abdomen study used three sessions and measured a result. A single session is a demonstration, not a course. The studies used three or four sessions in a first course and a review of the literature gives a range of three to eight; if your area needs more, we say so at the three-month review.
What EMsculpt NEO costs in Dublin
EMsculpt NEO is priced per session and per area, and a course is four sessions.
We price EMsculpt NEO from a starting price per session and per course, confirmed in writing at your free consultation, and we price match any comparable written quote. Consultations and follow-up reviews are free whatever you decide.
Compare courses, not sessions: a single session is a quarter of a course, and the trials that measured a result used three or four sessions on the current device. Your written plan names the device, the number of sessions per area and who places the applicator, so you can compare it like for like.
Consultations and follow-ups are free
Results you can check
At your consultation the clinician shows you photographs of our own patients where we have them, with their consent, chosen to be closest to your shape and area, and you can compare them with your own photographs at three months. We show you our own patients, where we have them, because results vary from person to person. We do not publish patient photographs here.
EMsculpt NEO compared with the alternatives
| Feature | EMsculpt NEO | CoolSculpting |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Stimulates the muscle and warms the fat | Freezes a pinchable fat fold |
| Cleared for (US) | Fat reduction of abdomen, thighs, flanks, upper arms; muscle toning of abdomen, buttocks, thighs, calves, arms | Fat reduction in nine areas |
| Sessions | 4, about a week apart (our protocol) | In expert consensus 2 to 6 cycles per area; the label gives no number |
| Downtime | None; muscle soreness for a day or two | No time off; numbness and bruising that can last several weeks |
| Fat change | About 28% of the layer at three months in the maker's trial; about 5.5 to 8 mm on average in independent reviews | About a fifth of the fat layer in the treated area (mean 20.6% by ultrasound in the studies compiled in the maker's manual) |
| Muscle change | About 24% thicker at three months in the maker's trial | None |
| Rare risks | None serious reported in the published studies | Paradoxical fat growth in about 1 in 455 patients in a 2025 meta-analysis (low-certainty evidence; the manufacturer quotes about 1 in 3,000 treatment cycles); freeze burn; hernia |
| Best for | A soft layer over a muscle; the core after pregnancy; flanks and arms | A firm, pinchable bulge; the chin |
The session and downtime rows reflect our clinical experience and the published protocols; the change rows are each manufacturer's own figures with the independent reviews named.
NEO vs the original EMsculpt. The original has no radiofrequency and no fat clearance. In a 67-person MRI study of the buttocks, NEO thickened the muscle by about 25% against about 16% for the original, and in the manufacturer's comparison the fat change rises from about 19% to about 30% and the muscle change from about 16% to about 25%. We run EMsculpt NEO, with both the muscle stimulation and the radiofrequency; when you compare quotes, ask which machine each clinic runs.
NEO vs CoolSculpting. They do different things, and we provide both at Clanwilliam Square. CoolSculpting removes fat cells from a fold you can pinch and does nothing for the muscle; it also carries a rare complication, paradoxical fat growth, that EMsculpt NEO has not been reported to cause in its published studies. For a pinchable bulge we suggest CoolSculpting; for a soft layer over a slack muscle, EMsculpt NEO; and for some people one after the other, which we plan with you at the consultation.
NEO vs exercise. EMsculpt NEO drives contractions its developers describe as beyond what you can do voluntarily, and it works with training rather than instead of it: in our experience the people who keep their result are the ones who keep training.

Are there any downsides? Side effects, and who should not have it
The published studies report mild redness where the applicator sat, lasting an hour or so, and muscle soreness for 24 to 48 hours; some people report their posture and back feeling better. No serious adverse event appears in the published studies; they are small, so the clinician screens everyone against the exclusion list before the first session. Some US consent forms list localised overheating, a heavier period in the days after treatment, and panniculitis, an inflammation of the fat, which none of the published studies reported.
What it asks of you is four visits, a stable weight and keeping the muscle working afterwards: in our experience the fat result holds while your weight holds and the muscle keeps its tone while you keep using it. The free consultation sets out what to expect for your own area before you pay anything.
The risks that matter are the ones on the exclusion list: an electronic implant or metal near the applicator, a hernia the contractions could worsen, and pregnancy. The clinician checks the exclusion list and the skin type limits with you at the free consultation, before anything is booked.
How to choose an EMsculpt NEO clinic in Dublin
- Ask which machine. EMsculpt NEO, not the original EMsculpt sold under the same name, and a genuine BTL device with the clinic listed by BTL as a provider.
- Ask who places the applicator and who supervises. Our sessions are run by trained clinicians under a doctor, and this guide is reviewed by the clinician named at the top.
- Ask for the plan per area, in sessions, in writing, in euro. A price for "a session" with no course is not a plan.
- Ask about the exclusions before you sign. Implants, metal, hernia, pregnancy.
- Ask for the clinic's own photographs, dated, with the number of sessions and the weeks since the last.
- Read the reviews, and check where they come from. Ours are collected through review.clinic, and the badge on this page links to them: 4.9 out of 5 from 64 reviews in October 2026, with 100% of reviewers saying the treatment was worth it.
- Ask what the figures mean for you. The 30% and 25% figures are the manufacturer's study averages; a clinic that pinches and measures your area can tell you whether you are a good candidate, and ours does that at the free consultation.
Aftercare
There is little you need to do. Drink normally, keep training, and expect the muscle to feel worked for a day or two; in our experience an ordinary painkiller is enough if it aches. Keep your weight stable through the three months, because the fat result is measured against it. Come to the free review at three months, and tell us before then if the area is painful rather than sore, or if the skin blisters or changes colour.

Frequently asked questions
How much does EMsculpt NEO cost in Dublin?
We price EMsculpt NEO from a starting price per session, per area and per course, confirmed in writing at a free consultation, and we price match any comparable written quote. Consultations and follow-up reviews are free.
How much do 4 sessions of EMsculpt NEO cost?
We price EMsculpt NEO from a starting price per session, per area and per course of four, confirmed in writing at a free consultation, and we price match any comparable written quote. Consultations and follow-up reviews are free.
Is EMsculpt NEO worth the money?
If you have a soft layer over a muscle you already use, a body mass index under about 30 and realistic expectations, it can be: in the trials the treated area was firmer and the fat layer thinner at three months, and the change held at six. EMsculpt NEO is not a weight-loss treatment, and a bulge you can pinch may suit CoolSculpting better, which we also provide; the free consultation tells you which fits.
Is 4 sessions of EMsculpt enough?
Four is the course used in the flank, arm and buttock studies and the one we run, and in our experience the fourth is where the change becomes visible rather than felt. Three sessions measured a result in the sham-controlled trial; our minimum is four. One session is a demonstration.
What is EMsculpt NEO, in one sentence?
A 30-minute treatment that stimulates the nerves of a muscle group with thousands of electromagnetic pulses while radiofrequency warms the fat over it, to firm the muscle and thin the fat layer in a treated area.
How long do the results last?
Held at six months in the sham-controlled trial, and for the muscle-only version a 21-patient uncontrolled study measured the changes about a year later: fat about 15% thinner and muscle about 19% thicker than at baseline. In our experience the muscle fades like any training if you stop using it, and the fat holds while your weight holds.
Does EMsculpt NEO hurt?
It is intense rather than painful for most people: strong contractions in waves and warmth from the radiofrequency, set to a level you can hold. In the manufacturer's FDA study 93% reported none to minimal discomfort. Expect muscle soreness for a day or two afterwards.
Is there any downtime?
None. You walk out and go back to your day; the skin is pink for an hour and the muscle feels worked for a day or two. The trials report no recovery period.
Which areas can be treated?
For fat and muscle together: the abdomen, the flanks, the thighs and the upper arms. For muscle toning only: the buttocks and the calves. The chin, the face and the neck are not EMsculpt NEO areas.
Does EMsculpt NEO work on the stomach after pregnancy?
It is a common request. In two small uncontrolled studies of the original EMsculpt, one in 10 postpartum women, the gap between the abdominal muscles narrowed by about 10% to 23%. We wait until you have recovered from the birth, check the gap and look for a hernia at the free consultation, and do not treat while you are pregnant or, on most clinic guidance, breastfeeding.
Does EMsculpt NEO work for men?
Yes. In our experience men ask for the abdomen and the flanks most. The sham-controlled trial enrolled men and women and found no link between sex and result.
What is the difference between EMsculpt and EMsculpt NEO?
The original EMsculpt stimulates the muscle only and has no fat-reduction clearance. EMsculpt NEO adds synchronised radiofrequency that warms the fat, and in the manufacturer's comparison the fat change rises from about 19% to about 30% and the muscle change from about 16% to about 25%. We run EMsculpt NEO; when you compare quotes, ask which machine each clinic runs.
Is EMsculpt NEO FDA approved?
It is FDA-cleared in the US, which is a different thing from approved: for fat reduction and circumference reduction of the abdomen (2019), the thighs (2021), the upper arms (2022) and the flanks (2023), and for muscle toning of the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, calves and arms (2018 and 2019). Buttocks and calves have no fat indication.
Can I have EMsculpt NEO with a coil, a metal implant or a hernia?
A copper coil, metal in or near the area and any electronic implant are on the exclusion lists, and a hernia in the area means we do not treat over it. Most hormonal coils contain little or no metal (some have a small silver ring), so we check the manufacturer's guidance for your device at the consultation rather than assume.
EMsculpt NEO or CoolSculpting?
EMsculpt NEO for a soft layer over a muscle you want firmer; CoolSculpting for a fold you can pinch. They do different things, we provide both at Clanwilliam Square, and some people have both, one after the other. We will tell you at the consultation which fits, or in which order.
Is a session really 20,000 crunches?
The figure comes from a paper that counted almost 20,000 pulses from the applicator in a 30-minute session. Pulses are not crunches: what you feel is strong, involuntary contractions of the muscle, and in the trials the muscle measured thicker at three months.
